Understanding Your Ovulation Cycle
Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from one of your ovaries. It typically occurs once per menstrual cycle, approximately 14 days before your next period. Understanding your ovulation pattern is key to both achieving and avoiding pregnancy.
The Menstrual Cycle Phases
| Phase | Days (28-day cycle) | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Menstruation | Days 1–5 | Uterine lining sheds |
| Follicular Phase | Days 1–13 | Egg follicle matures in ovary |
| Ovulation | Day 14 | Egg released — peak fertility |
| Luteal Phase | Days 15–28 | Progesterone rises; period starts if no pregnancy |
How to Detect Ovulation
- Basal Body Temperature (BBT): Take temperature first thing every morning. A slight rise of 0.2–0.5°C signals ovulation has occurred.
- Ovulation Predictor Kits (OPK): Detect the LH surge 24–36 hours before ovulation. Highly reliable when used correctly.
- Cervical Mucus: Becomes clear, stretchy, and egg-white in consistency around ovulation.
